The highly anticipated trailer for the sequel to 28 Years Later, which returned to the series after years of release this year, has arrived. The sequel, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be released early next year.
28 Years Later is Back
While the first film failed to meet expectations at the box office, this didn’t stop the series from continuing. Filming for the sequel began before the first film was even released. Sony released the first trailer today for the film, which is set for release on January 16, 2026.
The sequel’s script is again written by Alex Garland. However, the director’s role has changed. Danny Boyle, who directed the first film, is now solely a producer, while Nia DaCosta, known for her work on The Marvels, is taking over the direction.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple picks up the story where it left off. Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams, who appeared in the first film, return to their roles. Jack O’Connell, who appeared in a cameo at the end of the first film, returns in a larger role in the sequel.
The future of the series hinges on the box office success of this film. If the second film also disappoints at the box office, the planned trilogy may not see a third film.
This sequel will be a crucial test of the franchise’s survival. Both the return of screenwriter Alex Garland and the involvement of new director Nia DaCosta are intended to draw 28 Days Later fans back to theaters.
